Design Proposal
Mikvah is a specially constructed pool of collected natural water used for total immersion in a purification ceremony within Judaism. Its main uses nowadays are by Jewish women to achieve ritual purity after menstruation or childbirth, by Jewish men to achieve ritual purity, as part of a traditional procedure for conversion to Judaism, for utensils used for food. A mikvah is central to an Orthodox Jewish community. A Jewish community is traditionally required to build a mikvah (for women) before they build a synagogue, and to sell a Torah scroll to build one if need be.

The architecture of the building should represents its spiritual character, sacramentality and privacy as well as enginiring unicvity.

Design proposal
At the inception of this project, the client identified a number of functional and aesthetical requirements. First of all - to show respect to the established traditions of this religious community. In designing a synagogue structure, there are several given requirements that must be provided as elements of the final design. Examples of these requirements are: East orientation of the sanctuary, separation between male and female worshipers, and separation of the Mikvah space from the rest of the building. In terms of functional flexibility, the building should contain a sanctuary big enough to fit about 40 people on regular days, 100 on holidays, and 250 people on special events. The size of the areas that would contain these events are variable by moving folding walls. The Dining/Ballroom, the summer children’s camp and classes would have to be accommodated and be able to co-exist with day to day synagogue activities as well. As a result of limited budget concerns, the final design of the construction of the building was expected in two to three phases.

The proposed solution was to create a simple shape for the building with solid proportions and minimal details and at the same time to allow for carefully selected finishes to project the filling of eternal nature of the religious beliefs and the community. Aesthetically, the community expected that the main façade of the building would be a replica of the LubawichRebe House in Crown-Heights, New York.

One of the elevation preliminary sketches suggested an alternative idea to the requested replication of the Crown-Heights building, which may look good on a busy city street, but will not necessarily have the same positive effect as a different scale building on a glade or a forest hill. On that elevation version, the entrance seems to move toward the visitor, and there is much light passing through, which makes the greeting space full of light. It represents the main idea of the Lubavitch movement - to move toward nonobservant Jews and introduce to them the light of the Judaism teaching.
